Free Crochet Pattern - Baby's First Hat

I created this pattern when Amy was carrying her first child. I adopted it from the adult hat pattern I had created years earlier. Many of my other grandchild have received and worn hats made from the adult hat pattern.

We are now on an Etsy team, Promoting Creative Friends, that is crocheting for charity. So, I am sharing this pattern so that others can make hats to donate to charity. If our charity crocheting project grows, I can also create a pattern for a child's hat and an adult hat. Plus I also wrote the pattern for the crochet sweater the baby is wearing but that is another post.

Baby’s First Hat

Size: newborn or ~6 to 10 pound baby

Materials: yarn of choice and hook that works with yarn

Gauge: non needed

Construction: You will be working from the crown down toward baby’s ears

Start-up round: (Method two is harder to learn but makes a much clearner beginning.)

Method one: Make a slip-knot, CH (chain) 3, in the center of the first chain (the one farthest from the hook) make 6 HDC (half double crochet) stitches, SS (slip stitch) into top of ch 2 st. Circle made with 7 st (6 HDC and CH 2 counting as last stitch).

Method two: Make a very loose slip-knot and do not tighten knot, CH 2, in the center of the slip-knot, make 6 HDC (half double crochet) stitches, using the tail yarn of yarn gently pull to tighten circle, SS (slip stitch) into top of ch 2 st. Circle made with 7 st (6 HDC and CH 2 counting as last stitch).

Shaping the top of baby’s hat:

Round 1: CH 2, starting in the same stitch that the ch2 is coming out of 2 HDC into top of each HDC st in your start-up round, until you reach beginning ch 2. 1 HDC in same st as ch 2. (Do not do a second HDC in the final stitch as the ch 2 is counted as your 2nd HDC). SS into top of ch 2. 7 increases made. 14 st (13 HDC and 1 CH counted as last st).

Tip: Always be careful to make your first HDC in the stitch right next to your chain. Even though you started the round with 2 chains, your chain is counted as your last st. Take the time to count your stitches at the end of each round until you understand this concept.

Round 2: CH 2, * 2 HDC into first st, HDC in next st, * repeat from * * around. SS into top of ch 2. 7 increases made. 21 st (20 HDC and 1 chain counted as last st).

Round 3: CH 2, * 2 HDC into first st, HDC in next 2 sts * repeat from * * around. SS into top of ch 2. 7 increases made. 28 st

Round 4: CH 2, * 2 HDC into first st, HDC in next 3 sts, * repeat from * * around. SS into top of ch 2. 7 increases made. 35 st

Continue increasing 7 additional stitches with every round as above until circle measures approximately 5” or larger in diameter.

Creating the side of baby’s hat:

Round 1: CH 2, starting with first stitch HDC in each ST around, SS ST into top of CH 2.

Round 2 – end: Repeat Round 1 until sides measure 3 1/2” or longer if you want to roll up hat to form a cuff.

Last Round – optional: CH 1, crab stitch around to last ST, cut working yarn leaving around 4”. Wrap yarn around hook and pull length through loop. Pull end of yarn to secure knot. Using a tapestry needle, thread yarn through the beginning crab stitch, tighten and continue weaving in yarn until finishing looks same as rest of border and the yarn end is secure.

Finishing: Weave in your all loose ends and enjoy!

I have been asked how to direct people directly to ones Facebook wall or ones Facebook welcome page. Here are the steps.

1) Goto your facebook page using fb as a page

2) Click on edit page in top right corner

3) Around 1/3 down there is a question: Default Landing Tab: with a drop down menu

4) You would want to choose wall - where as I chose welcome

Facebook page name - get rid of those numbers at the end of your link

I have noticed lately that many Facebook pages still have all those numbers at the end of their page name. And several people have asked in forum how to rid rid of these numbers once they have their 25 likes.

It is very simple just:

> go to on your page
> click use Facebook as page
> click edit page (top right corner)
> click basic information (left side near top)
> change your name (in middle down from top just a bit)
